About Cody Johnson

“I see a trend of ‘I need to get a hit. I need to get a record deal right now so I can get a hit, so I can get the stadium [show], so I can get the money, so I can get a No. 1 video, so I can get the fame,’” Cody Johnson once told Apple Music. “And I’m like, ‘I genuinely care about country music. I care about where we’ve come from, and I care about where we’re going.’ And that means more to me than dollar signs and fame, because if I do my job good enough, the dollar signs and fame and all that stuff just goes along with it.” It’s difficult to imagine many songwriters whose lives have been more suited to the mythologies of country music than Johnson. Born in Texas in 1987, Johnson started picking on the guitar before he was a teenager, but competitive bull riding soon became his main focus. When he left the rodeo circuit, he took up a job as a prison supervisor, and music became his side hustle. A DIY spirit and dogged work ethic—Johnson released his early records on his own label—paved the path to his music career, and his 2011 album, A Different Day, allowed him to quit his day job. His major-label debut, 2019’s Ain’t Nothin’ to It, turned him into an overnight sensation—after nearly 15 years. He released its follow-up, Human: The Double Album, in 2021 and Leather in 2023, which includes collabs with Jelly Roll, Brooks & Dunn, and Carrie Underwood. In 2026, he released Banks of the Trinity, which also features Johnson working with Brothers Osborne and Luke Combs.
