Pelican

Los Angeles-by-way-of-Chicago instrumental quartet Pelican pride themselves on being impossible to classify. While it might be easy to label them metal, their extended compositions explore too many moods and textures to be reduced to a single genre. Drawing equally from the deep, dark pool filled by Black Sabbath and the meditative post-rock coming out of Chicago, Pelican can be crushingly heavy and ethereal within the same song.
