Big Thief has been known to tackle intensely personal themes: family histories, deaths, isolation, fear. Here, on their expansive third album, the New York indie rock band shifts its gaze outward and into the unknown. "Just like a bad dream/You'll disappear,” frontwoman Adrianne Lenker coos on the title track. "And I imagine you/Taking me outta here.” Through gentle strums and hushed, tumbling melodies, the band wonders: Who's out there? Are they as strange as we are? What’s real? The second F in the album’s title stands for “friend”—an optimistic embrace of all things unfamiliar or alien. Their songs—comforting, eerie, folksy, magnificent—do the same.
