If there was ever any doubt about Baltimore hardcore crew Turnstile’s eclectic tastes, VERSIONS will safely put that to rest. This reimagining of their Grammy-winning, genre-busting 2025 album NEVER ENOUGH includes contributions from an incredibly wide variety of handpicked musical guests that amounts to a kaleidoscopic cross-section of modern music. It’s unlikely that Sir Elton John and Baltimore slam-metal kings Dying Fetus will ever appear on the same album again, but the artist formerly known as Reginald Dwight is tickling the ivories on “SEEIN STARS” while John Gallagher’s death-dealers carve off a vicious version of “BIRDS.” The diverse interpretations stretch the definition of a remix album, adding layers and directions to an album that already made its mark by stretching the definition of punk. Each of the original tracks gets a radical new take; several get more than one. Blood Orange’s airy take on “LIGHT DESIGN” is dreamy and mellow; French singer Oklou’s is somber and vaguely churchy. Paramore’s Hayley Williams’ expansive version of “CEILING” is soulful and sedate—and more than twice as long as the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it 1:13 of the original. British jazz guru Shabaka Hutchings’ skronky sax takes “SLOWDIVE” on a Sun Ra-esque journey, far away from the song’s Sabbathian origins. Turnstile vocalist Brendan Yates’ punk compatriots in Angel Du$t dispense with the Zen finale of “SUNSHOWER” and replace it with pure punk aggression.
