Death Cab for Cutie aren’t just heading up this week’s ALT CTRL—they might be its perfect ambassadors. This playlist (formerly known as The A-List: Alternative) is the home for new music that’s just left of centerand a little rough around the edges, but doesn’t let that get in the way of a catchy tune. The opening track to Death Cab for Cutie’s new five-track The Blue EP, the follow-up to last year’s Thank You for Today, couldn’t fit the definition better—it builds from a steady drum beat and guitar line to a climax as dramatic and cathartic as any the band hascrafted in its20-plus years. “This was a controversial song as it was one of the first recorded for Thank You for Today, and right up until the mastering deadline it was going to either start or end the album,” guitarist Dave Depper tells Apple Music. “In the end, we couldn't decide and just took it off entirely! It seems to have found its rightful home kicking off The Blue EP, where it can kick back and stretch its legs a bit more.” We’re constantly adding new tracks to this playlist—from melodic synth-pop to big-hearted guitar anthems and more—so check back often. And when you hear something you like, add it to your library.
