“I’m a rock star,” announces Miss Kaninna on this short but incendiary mixtape. And though she may be an MC first and foremost, it’s hard to ignore the rap-rock energy of several tracks here—as well as in her ARIA-nominated live show, which has seen her tour with the equally outspoken likes of Kneecap and Amyl and The Sniffers. Since debuting with the 2024 EP KANINNA, the First Nations rapper has only strengthened her attack on colonialism and nationalism in Australia. She mocks the racism implicit in both the Southern Cross flag and the “Aussie Aussie Aussie, oi oi oi” chant on “MOB TIES,” and uses a history of exploitive labor practices as a launchpad for wider concerns about cultural divides on “STOLEN WAGES.” Developed from live freestyles, these six cuts capture Miss Kaninna’s seething indignation and razor-sharp articulation. On the brash title track alone, she nods to her prior single (and self-coined nickname) “Blak Britney,” while proving how much she has grown in conviction as a writer and performer since then.
