“When the Black Lives Matter movement was going on, a lot of people [were saying] I need to say something about it,” Baker Boy tells Apple Music. The Yolŋu rapper born Danzal Baker knew he wanted to say something, but “I just couldn’t because I didn’t know the right words.” He posted about it on social media at the time, and here, on “WAR CRY”—a collaborative track with American artist Jean Deaux, from his recent album DJANDJAY—he talks about using his music to stand up for his beliefs, to share his history, and to unite his listeners. “This was my war cry of saying, ‘I’m Black and I’m proud,’” he says. “And I’ll say my things how I want to say and how I want to tackle racism my own way, which is through music.” Hear “WAR CRY” on FIRST, which showcases the best, freshest music from First Nations artists. It’s curated and updated every month by Wiradjuri woman Jaja Dare—if you hear something you like, add it to your library. The artwork was created in collaboration with Kamilaroi artist Reko Rennie.
