“I’m a husband now,” Blossoms’ Tom Ogden sings on “Husband,” the second song on the band’s sixth album. Its title nods to Stockport Town Hall—locally known as “The Wedding Cake”—the venue where Ogden got married in 2021 (to drummer Joe Donovan’s sister Katie). Five years later, Songs from The Wedding Cake is carried by the kind of giddy buoyancy you feel on your wedding day—and the specificity that comes with spending every day with someone you love. “So hungover caught you crying at The Kardashians,” Ogden sings, for instance, on “The Kardashians,” an unlikely name for a love song on which he also declares, “I think you ended up saving me.” Blossoms have always traded in hook-laden indie-pop that makes you feel good, but the band sound in particularly high spirits on Songs from The Wedding Cake. There’s the shoulder-shimmying funk of “Meet Me in Love,” the soaring, call-and-response chorus of “Husband,” and the silly fun of “Additional Driver,” on which Blossoms recruit Declan McKenna to tell the true story of a car crash. See, too, “Joke About Divorce,” which turns Ogden’s wife’s reaction to a throwaway joke during a marital argument into a knowing, funk-laden bop that unexpectedly features Rick Astley on backing vocals. Things get sentimental, too, as Ogden honors the woman he loves across “Guts”, the ’80s-inspired “Uma Thurman” and “Where Have You Been My Whole Life?” And on the lovely, sprawling closing track, the singer luxuriates in feeling his adoration for his wife just keep growing. “Lately/Loving you/I’m in the deep end, babe/Without you I’d rather be dead.”
