SHAKE TAPE - EP

Chameleonic Virginia native DRAM blew up in the mid-2010s with melodic trap-pop earworms that brought joy (and occasionally drama) to the rap charts. But by his second album, 2021’s Shelley FKA DRAM, he’d not only undergone a name change but pivoted to the smooth sounds of soul, funk, and R&B. DRAM has since returned to his original moniker, though on the six-track EP Shake Tape, he delves deeper into the lover-boy persona of 2024’s DRAM&B, laying down lusty melodies in the mode of Boyz II Men over heady dance beats. He turns come-ons into mantras on the bouncy club anthems “The Way” and “Beast” and drifts into G-funk reveries on “Dream Shake.” And on “As I Recall...,” he channels a blunted Barry White for some soulful spoken word: “Something about the way you carry yourself/Knew you was raised by decent folk/So what, you smoke like Cheech and Chong?/I don’t know a real bitch who don’t.”
