girl music vol. 1 - EP

When Ty Dolla $ign blew up in the early 2010s with solo singles like “My Cabana,” the Los Angeles native was an R&B Renaissance man, crooning melodies that recalled the passionate slow jams of the ’90s. As the years passed, the singer/songwriter/producer embraced a darker hip-hop sound, until a dinner in New York City reminded him of his roots. “The DJ at the restaurant was playing all the right music, and it got us thinking about the music that girls really want to hear,” Ty wrote in an Instagram post. “This project was a beyond natural return back to my musical sound, back to performing with a live band: my real R&B vibes.” The six tracks of his girl music vol. 1 EP luxuriate in old-school R&B energy: Ronald Isley backup vocals on “nobody has to know,” a pitch-perfect Darkchild homage on “3 billion,” and vintage vocal runs from Brandy on “intention.”
