GIRA - EP

Two cousins hailing from the Ngulungbura Clan of the Butchulla nation, rapper Birdz and songman Fred Leone flex an impressive counterpoint across this six-song EP. On the opening title track, which translates to “fire,” Leone sings resonantly in the ancient Butchulla language while Birdz raps nimbly in English. Sometimes these individual styles are contrasted and sometimes they’re layered together, lending emotional heft to tracks that question religion, politics, and much more. “Progress is coming through, watching it on my news,” deadpans Leone over a melodic piano hook on “All on My Own,” before Birdz alludes to First Nations incarceration rates and the wider struggle for survival. “Migaloo” is equally pointed about the disparity between contested land rights and coveted First Nations art (“They only ever like us when we paint”), as well as attempts to gloss over the tragedy of colonisation in Australia. Against the bigger bass and deep Kuluru (Garrwa language for yidaki/didgeridoo) notes of the closing “Wanya Nyin Yanmanj”—named after a casual greeting—the pair go even harder on lyrics that Leone has said are intended to start a conversation. Tapping producer Trials (A.B. Original, Funkoars) and a vocal guest spot from Kamilaroi, Kooma, Jiman, and Gurang Gurang activist Uncle Richard Bell, the track manages to be as cutting as it is catchy.
