NYC Garage Essentials

Garage music—named after the Paradise Garage, where resident DJ Larry Levan held court—was born in New York and New Jersey in the early '80s as disco morphed into house music. More spacious and synthetic than much disco, yet more soulfully musical than later house, it's a best-of-both-worlds sound. Its mirror-ball influences shine through in the walking bass and flashing hi-hats of Loose Joints' "Is It All Over My Face?"; its deeper, darker club energies shine through in pumping cuts from Blaze, Mood II Swing, and Masters at Work, who flipped jazz keys and gospel vocals into the template for deep house.
