Lulu Essentials

Lulu was only 15 when she stormed the British charts with her 1964 cover of The Isley Brothers' classic “Shout,” heralding a new era of raspy-voiced, rock-fueled pop music. Born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie in 1948 Scotland, the gifted singer eventually known as Lulu was preternaturally talented, even fronting a pub band called The Bellrocks by age 12. Her meteoric career was filled with early milestones: starring in the 1967 film To Sir With Love, winning the Eurovision Song Contest two years later with “Boom Bang a Bang,” and singing the theme for 1974 James Bond romp, The Man With The Golden Gun. Lulu appeared in numerous BBC television shows throughout the ‘70s and reclaimed her throne in the British pop pantheon with her 1993 collaboration with Take That for disco anthem “Relight My Fire.”
