Jamaica Ska a classic. Ska Ska Ska ad infinitum. Soulja Boy feature on Delirious is perfect and this song oozes 2009. Mya song still holds up. Did not remember the title spelling whoa as “Wo”. “Porque llorar” (“Why Cry”) seems like a terrible idiomatic translation of Beatles’ “Don’t Let Me Down” but it sounds good. There is a really beautiful montage on the finale for the latest season of the Joe Pera Show where the kids choir does a version of “Mighty Quinn” (a Bob Dylan song). Fruit Bats song has major Beegees vibes (❤️DW) Champagne is a cool nickname and “Get Up Off Your Love” deepens my desire to be an 80s synth bass keyboard player. Songs Ohia song is very beautiful like most of the others & I am always a sucker for songs that have lines about letting someone win. Love that there is no Single Edit of this Wham song & they refused to edit out 30 seconds of cicadas in the beginning. Also a satire(!) about terrible clubs—very blessed misunderstood “Born in the USA” vibes. I wish all Squeeze songs sounded better (and louder) on streaming services & got remastered. Same for Husker Du. Digital rock black holes. “Mbube” Is the origin of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” and is a great jam. A real loss that the cover Dave sent me in college of “Lion Sleeps Tonight” isn’t on my phone or Apple Music. Cacophonous Okonkolo track was put out by bountiful NY record label Big Crown that has also released El Michels Affair (Wu Tang horns) and Lee Fields. Minnie Ripperton scatting in the beginning of this song & doing crazy harmonies with herself is wonderful! She is much more than that one falsetto song “Lovin You.” This version of “Papa Oom Mow Mow” has a full harmony section & verses referencing the original (nonsensical) version of the song, an obscure & strange garage rock tale I found last month. This particular lyrical phrase has been stuck in my head for months now & may stay there forever.
