About Phoenix
Phoenix is a French band that combines modern indie rock with sleek ’70s and ’80s retro sounds.
∙ The band was originally formed in 1995 by bored school friends looking for something to do while growing up amid the staid surroundings of Versailles, France.
∙ The disco-fied “If I Ever Feel Better,” a single from their acclaimed 2000 debut album, United, was a major hit in France and Italy.
∙ “Too Young,” from United, was featured in the Oscar-winning 2003 film Lost in Translation, which was directed by Phoenix singer Thomas Mars’ future wife, Sofia Coppola.
∙ Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, their mainstream breakthrough, won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album and was ranked No. 3 on Rolling Stone’s Top 25 Albums of 2009 list.
∙ Phoenix’s synth-driven 2009 single “1901” topped Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart and sold more than one million copies in the US alone.
∙ Their ’80s-centric 2013 LP, Bankrupt!, reached the Top 5 in both the US and France, and the band won the French Ministry of Culture’s Victoires de la Musique award for Rock Album of the Year.
