About Japanese Breakfast

Japanese Breakfast was built out of grief but has blossomed into a vibrant experimental pop band that embraces the entire spectrum of the human experience. Singer-songwriter Michelle Zauner, born in 1989 in Seoul, South Korea, created the alias as a solo project while fronting Philadelphia-based emo band Little Big League. Following a move back to her childhood home of Eugene, OR, and the death of her mother, Zauner channeled her pain into one of the decade’s most heartrending debuts with 2016’s shimmering lo-fi stunner Psychopomp. Follow-up Soft Sounds from Another Planet was no less heavy in metaphor and melancholy, while its spacey synth-pop glowed a little brighter. Still, it wasn’t so easy for Zauner, who also wrote the 2021 best-selling memoir Crying in H Mart, to expand her emotional palette. “I thought it was a real challenge for a sad indie girl to take on joy,” she told Apple Music, describing 2021’s lush and playful Jubilee—a triumphant step in her inspiring evolution as Japanese Breakfast.
