Essential Albums
- Enslaved’s brand of extreme metal has frightened folks the world over. Yet they’ve pushed musical boundaries in ways that have earned them legions of hardcore fans. On their 13th album, each song establishes a middle ground between moshpit slams and mounting midtempo melodies. Beautiful Radiohead–meets–Moody Blues soundscapes shift into visceral metal screeches on “One Thousand Years of Rain,” and it’s both creepy and appealing. Other songs, like “Thursiaz Dreaming” and “Building with Fire,” are dynamically similar and reveal how frontman Grutle Kjellson is one of the best metal singers alive. His ability to swing between croons and shrieks is unmatched.

About Enslaved
Enslaved are masters of Norwegian black/Viking metal who have, since the early '90s, consistently employed a forward-thinking approach to their craft while retaining their extreme roots. They offer a vastly more complex compositional style and reject the term "black metal" as limiting. With its warm production and clean vocals, 1997's Eld was followed by releases like 2003's Below the Lights, which explored emotional and psychological states with myriad instruments. 2015's In Times peaked at four on the Heatseekers chart, while 2017's E won Norway's Spellemannprisen. 2023's Heimdal peaked at six in the U.K.
