Essential Albums
- Widely recognized as the band’s masterpiece, 1999’s At the Heart of Winter was the first Immortal album on which vocalist/bassist Abbath also played guitar. His electrifying riffs and icy melodies coalesced with vastly improved production to establish the Norwegian power trio as black metal’s reigning kings. At a time when most of their peers were fixating on Satan or the works of Tolkien, Immortal were conjuring the arctic violence of Blashyrkh, their own fictional lyrical realm.

About Immortal
Norwegian black metal band Immortal stand apart from the legion of genre bands by sticking close to the dark fantasy, occult-inspired vision of the original scene. The Bergen group eschewed their peers' classical structuring and progressive experimentation in favor of blackened purity and raw power. The trio's three earliest albums, Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism (1992) Pure Holocaust (1993), and Battles in the North (1995), stand as iconic BM recordings. 1999's At the Heart of Winter and 2002's Sons of Northern Darkness (2002) added an acclaimed thrash element. Immortal disbanded between 2003 and 2007 and reunited for 2009's breakout, All Shall Fall. They followed with years of touring. Following a major change in membership in 2015, the group returned for 2018's Northern Chaos Gods and several tours. 2023 saw the release of War Against All.
