In the Woods...

Norway's enigmatic avant-garde/progressive black metal band In the Woods... challenges the extreme metal subgenre's limits with their highly experimental and diversified songwriting. Initially operating as a death metal band under the moniker Green Carnation, they rebranded as In the Woods... in 1992 and released their debut album, Heart of the Ages, three years later. Subsequent efforts Omnio (1997) and Strange in Stereo (1999) saw the band continue to innovate, adding more progressive elements to their sound and reinforcing their emerging influence in the underground metal scene. In the Woods… disbanded in 2000, but returned in the 2010s, issuing a string of acclaimed efforts like Pure (2016) and Otra (2025) that combine technical prowess with unrelenting aggression and icy, doomy elegance.
