About Pop Will Eat Itself

British alternative act Pop Will Eat Itself is known for a brash, aggressive fusion of punk, hip-hop, and sample-heavy dance music. Though they initially started out making noisy indie pop during the mid-'80s, they quickly incorporated rapping, breakbeats, and electronic rhythms into their music, becoming the face of the short-lived but influential grebo subculture. Following an independently issued debut LP, PWEI signed to major-label RCA and released This Is the Day...This Is the Hour...This Is This! in 1989. For several years, the group became fixtures of the U.K. album and single charts, eventually scoring a Top Ten hit with "Get the Girl! Kill the Baddies!" in 1993. They moved into a more industrial-influenced, politically minded direction with 1994's Dos Dedos Mis Amigos, then disbanded and worked on individual projects. Reformed lineups of PWEI produced albums such as New Noise Designed by a Sadist (2011) and Delete Everything (2025).
