Greatest Hits, Vol. 1

Korn debuted in 1994, in an era when heavy metal had ceded the spotlight to grunge. In response, the Bakersfield, CA group spliced together hip-hop drum fills and Red Hot Chili Peppers-indebted funk basslines ("Freak on a Leash"), minor-key gothic churn ("Blind"), and death metal-inspired riffs ("Clown"), creating an onslaught that remade mainstream metal in their own image. This best-of summarizes their first decade, with their most anthemic moments ("Make Me Bad") and aggressive attacks ("Here to Stay") fueled by frontman Jonathan Davis' tortured wails.
