Thawing Dawn

Thawing Dawn

Though known for their wry, punky garage rock, Parquet Courts have always flirted with country, or at least some warped version of it—just check out tracks like “Pathos Prairie” or “Uncast Shadow of a Southern Myth.” Following in the footsteps of artists like Townes Van Zandt or Silver Jews’ David Berman, co-frontman Andrew Savage’s solo debut is one for the porch, flirting with rumbling cowboy songs (“Winter in the South”), pedal-steel ballads (“Phantom Limbo”), and alien extensions of the blues (“What Do I Do”), all shot through with the humorous—but earnest—lyricism that has come to make Savage’s songs so great.
