The average up-and-coming artist would consider radio play or a festival booking as great recognition. But Jill Scott describing Kaiit as her and Erykah Badu’s “baby” in an Instagram post before the release of this debut EP was was the kind of career boost one could only dream of. Over smooth, jazzy neo-soul, the Papua New Guinea-born, Melbourne-based songwriter sings and raps about love and growing up with natural, finessed ease. “Girl in the Picture” is an understated heart-to-heart about a bad relationship: “Sis, you don’t need him/I’m telling you this as my girl/I only want the best for you,” she sings over dainty harmonies, keys, and trumpet. The EP ends on a high, as “Natural Woman” reflects on life and thrilling first love, while the chorus pays homage to the Aretha Franklin classic.
