Claire Rosinkranz’s 2023 debut album Just Because found the California-based singer-songwriter bringing in a wide tent of collaborators off the strength of her 2020 viral hit “Backyard Boy.” For her follow-up My Lover, Rosinkranz largely doubles down in the studio with one of her closest creative compatriots: her father Ragnar Rósinkranz, an Icelandic composer who handles co-production across the record’s 13 songs. My Lover is packed with unexpected melodic runs and snappy turns of phrase, reminiscent of fellow ascendant pop peer Audrey Hobert as well as Meghan Trainor’s airy confections. Rosinkranz isn’t afraid to get personal, either: On the piano ballad “Chronic,” she details the personal conflict she felt around a potentially career-derailing illness she survived earlier in the decade, cooing, “I wanna feel better/But something about being sick is easy, twisted, comfortable.”
