BIG MAMA

BIG MAMA

Strange but true: In the 18 years since Flying Lotus founded Brainfeeder Records, the producer and composer has yet to release a record of his own on the imprint that’s been home to Thundercat, Kamasi Washington, and more. That changes with BIG MAMA, FlyLo’s long-awaited Brainfeeder debut, created during a two-month stretch of isolation in New Zealand while directing and scoring his first feature film, Ash. Designed as one continuous piece of music, the 13-minute EP leans all the way into cartoonish maximalism, with skittering breakbeats, hyperactive keyboard runs, and the occasional villainous laugh. It’s paired with artwork by Christopher Ian Macfarlane and a self-directed accompanying short film.
