Sinking into deep concentration doesn’t come easy, but the right music can help. Whether you’re practicing mindfulness, immersing yourself in deep meditation, or needing to focus on study or work, these tracks will get you there—and keep you in the flow. They were selected by LA-based artist and composer Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, who has taken over Headspace in honor of World Mental Health Day. Throughout, you’ll find her gorgeous selections of gentle ambient, electronic, and instrumental music, with melodic rhythms and softly propulsive beats that feel engaging enough to keep you alert, but subtle enough to settle into the background. Smith’s takeover opens on “Them,” from German pianist, composer, and producer Nils Frahm. “I keep returning to this song,” she tells Apple Music. “It’s such a beautiful composition and creates a sonic isolated connection feeling for me. I love everything Nils Frahm creates.” Elsewhere, you’ll hear plenty of Smith’s own tracks alongside many that span the globe. There’s a particular focus on Japanese artists, such as the late ambient composer Susumu Yokota. “This song always feels like the windows and doors opening,” she says of his 2005 track “Blue Sky and Yellow Sunflower.” “Like space is given where there is constriction. I love how music can create a sense of freedom. This song really feels like freedom for me.”
