Acoustic Levitation is underground Texas hero Devin the Dude’s first album after a four-year layoff, but his idiosyncratic and melodic stoner rap hasn’t been blunted by time. Tracks like “Are You Goin’ My Way” and “Please Pass That to Me” are full of woozy grooves and soulful hooks, with his sticky Southern drawl hanging over the beats like smoke in the air. Elsewhere, the deep bassline and squelchy synths of “Apartment #8216” lend an eerie chill to Devin’s story of creepy, slasher-movie-style violence.
