Mexican American rapper Deebaby’s Junkie Mode 2 (the first iteration arrived in 2023) is a hyper-vulnerable look inside the paranoia and trauma that has fueled the rise of one of Houston’s most influential voices of the 2020s. It’s all there on opener “Cocaine Lines,” as Deebaby artfully sketches the cruel cycle of drug abuse, hostility, exhaustion, and amends that have defined his lower moments. It’s easy to understand why he’s chosen to buoy himself with “Percocet, codeine lines, cocaine lines.” He raps, “Family members said they love me, bitch, I’m scarred ’cause they all lied.” Where do you turn when you can’t trust anyone? It’s a question he tackles on “Who Do You Call,” which features the rapper ruminating over a piano-led trap beat. He recalls being asked, “’You the one that everybody call, who do you call?’” It’s the record’s essential question, and one the MC spends the duration working back from in an attempt to find peace. “Life isn’t always easy,” Deebaby seems to say, “but look how far I’ve come.” Our Favorite Lyric: “Arm & a Leg”: “I ain’t entertainin’ anybody anymore if it ain’t about me/I done gave so many favors, people lookin’ at me like it’s all free.”
