Bluestars

Bluestars

The unrelentingly horny Miami group ushered in a new era of R&B. Miami’s raunchiest crooners Pretty Ricky landed like an asteroid when they released their 2005 debut album Bluestars. The group—Baby Blue, Spectacular, Slick’em, and Pleasure P—began making noise in Florida in the late 1990s and early 2000s, when 2003 single “Flossin” became a regional radio hit. Two years later, their blend of unrelentingly horny R&B lyrics with a defined rap edge became the most coveted style in popular music as Bluestars helped usher in a new era of contemporary sounds. The group was formed in the mold of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony and Jodeci but updated for a new generation, incorporating Miami bass, pop, and the sexed-up charm of hunky superstars like USHER. Bluestars is led by “Grind with Me,” which remained the inimitable song in the group’s discography even as they dropped more albums and expanded their scope. It exemplifies everything Pretty Ricky does so well: It’s so explicit it’ll make even the most vulgar fans blush, but the hypnotic melodies make it impossible not to sing along.
