You want swagger and bravado? The early Who had it in spades, with Pete Townshend writing two deathless youth anthems: "The Kids Are Alright," with its wistful camaraderie and chiming harmonies, and the title track, with its out-of-our-heads bluster and sneering anger. No self-respecting mod would be caught dead without a stack of great soul records, and The Who show their mettle on a couple of James Brown numbers. Their first instrumental, "The Ox," unleashes the fearsome power of the Keith Moon/John Entwistle rhythm section.
