The Idaho-hailing artist leans into folkier, more narrative songwriting. Gabriella Rose first honed her sound on TikTok, though the singer-songwriter from northern Idaho doesn’t make the kind of poppy, radio-ready music that populates so much of #CountryTok. Instead, Rose leans into a folkier, more songwriter-driven take on country music, often favoring a vivid narrative over a rapid-fire procession of hooks. Take “Codeine,” a Miranda Lambert-coded love song that likens a lover to the titular addictive painkiller. Punchy bass and percussive guitar lend the tune a poppy sheen, but Rose’s restraint and gauzy production ground the song in sonic territory that recalls Lambert’s The Weight of These Wings or Kacey Musgraves’ rootsier moments. There’s still plenty of fun to be had, though, like on “Range Rover,” which brings a touch of chirpy synth into an otherwise brooding arrangement, and “Hang Around,” a groovy slice of country soul with a laidback vibe. Rose only has one guest join her on I Just Wanna Be Loved but it’s a heavy hitter, as buzzy up-and-comer Cameron Whitcomb lends his gritty tenor to the nostalgic and yearning “Think About Me.”
