A few weeks ago, Cody Jinks released a highly awaited new album, Mercy. The follow-up to his acclaimed 2019 LP The Wanting, Mercy follows in that album’s footsteps, indulging raucously in the fringe country-rock that made Jinks a cult favorite. Mercy standout “Like a Hurricane” showcases one of the Texas native’s more soulful vocals, with his performance recalling fellow genre outsiders Eric Church and Sturgill Simpson. Lyrically, the track celebrates the underdog, with Jinks singing, “When you’re coming from the bottom you don’t feel like number one/There’ll be days that seem impossible until you get ’em done.” This playlist tracks what’s happening from the heart of the country scene to its outer edges.
