In 2024, Charles Wesley Godwin and his wife, Samantha, experienced the unimaginable, losing their son, Samuel, who was delivered stillborn. This album, which follows 2023’s Family Ties, chronicles that heartbreaking time, as well as Godwin’s own profound healing journey in the years since. Produced by Al Torrence, Christian Name is unsurprisingly vulnerable and intimate, with a thematic through line of hanging on to faith that adds a sense of peace and lightness to Godwin’s explorations of grief. Highlights include the optimistic “Better That Way,” which features vocals from Luke Combs, and closing track “Brand New,” a frank and tender meditation on finding redemption through faith. The beating heart of the record is the Wyatt Flores collaboration “Hey There Son,” a Lori McKenna co-write full of parental wisdom that lets Godwin connect his love for his late father to his love and hope for his children.
