Back in 1999, Cypress Hill put out Los Grandes Exitos En Español, a compilation of several of the pioneering group’s hits and fan favorites redone with Spanish-language vocals. Even before that culturally significant moment arrived in their discography, their albums and singles had a bilingual bent, yet this particular release served an international audience that had been rallying behind their success. Some two-and-a-half decades later, the enduring hip-hop act’s latest album marks a first in their discography, with B-Real and Sen Dog rapping entirely in Spanish. With longtime percussionist Eric Bobo serving as music director and DJ Lord offering up scratches on the proverbial ones-and-twos, Dios Bendiga leans into Latin rhythms and other such elements fitting with the album’s evident intent. The 420 ethos driving no small amount of their mass appeal surfaces as expected, perhaps best exemplified on the reggae-infused “Otra.” Yet while songs like “Estamos Listos” and “Rosas Verdes” spotlight Cypress Hill’s core, the majority of these tracks are collaborations that draw in rap talent from across Latin America as well as notables from their own backyard. Mexican rap star Alemán and Argentine phenom Trueno pay homage to their clear inspirations in the best way possible on “Wacha Trucha” and “Saca La Bolsita,” respectively. Both Sen Dog’s real-life brother and a former founding member of the group, Mellow Man Ace returns to the fold for “Campeones,” while The Psycho Realm’s own Sick Jacken appears with his old friends on “No Tengo Miedo” and the boom-bap throwback “Voló.”
