Continuing their decades-long tradition of making new music in an old-school style, Norwegian duo Darkthrone carve off a riff-heavy colossus on Pre-Historic Metal. Opener “They Found One of My Graves” is a one-way ticket to the ’80s metal cemetery with a synthesizer side quest that gives the song a supernatural edge. “The Dry Wells of Hell” combines mid-paced thrash with plodding doom as drummer and spokesperson Fenriz gives an inspired vocal performance. “So I Marched to the Sunken Empire” is an otherworldly instrumental that segues into the dizzying metal-punk and gothic interludes of “Eat Eat Eat Your Pride.” Shape-shifting closer “Eon 4” is the latest installment of a suite that stretches back to Darkthrone’s 1991 debut, Soulside Journey.
