In closing out their 40-plus-year career, Brazilian metal legends Sepultura say goodbye with one final EP. The chaotic grindcore-meets-orchestral opener “All Souls Rising” was inspired by Madison Smartt Bell’s novel of the same name, which details the Haitian slave rebellion of the 1790s. The power ballad “Beyond the Dream” features clean vocals from singer Derrick Green and tasteful solos from longtime guitarist Andreas Kisser. “Sacred Books” rails against religion with modern thrash and evocative piano runs while closer “The Place” offers an incisive take on the immigrant experience. The Cloud of Unknowing is the only Sepultura recording to feature 23-year-old American drummer Greyson Nekrutman, and you can hear his fleet-footed dexterity and jazz background throughout.
