Tijuana native Oscar Ortiz hails from a recognizable musical family, his older brothers Gerardo and Kevin already established as recording artists. Yet in a relatively short period of time, the rising singer-songwriter built a strong catalog of largely collaborative singles including the forlorn Edgardo Nuñez duet “FIRST LOVE,” a chart-topping música mexicana hit. That memorable track leads SILENCIO HABLA, a debut full-length effort that augments previously released tracks like “AMIGOS PARA QUÉ” and “BB PA DONDE” with all-new material. Among the highlights are “ESCONDIDAS,” a hopeful and heartfelt team-up with Gabito Ballesteros, and “CARO,” an embittered ballad that infuses corridos tumbados elements into a heartbreak narrative. He brings a poppy sensibility to sentimental odes “ARTE” and “MI TRANQUILIDAD,” countering their bright, romantic themes with dour yet relatable cuts including “COPILOTO” and the downwardly spiraling “SAD EYES.” Those who’ve followed Ortiz thus far will assuredly catch glimmers of his progression throughout, something especially evident on the atmospheric closer “RAPTOR.”
