Editors’ Notes Bastille frontman Dan Smith wrote “survivin’” shortly before lockdown, and was initially self-conscious about how on-the-nose the song’s subject matter turned out to be. “Then I realized that 2020 is the year we all stopped pretending everything’s fine,” he tells Apple Music. “I suppose like a lot of Bastille’s music, [it's about] optimism and hope in a dystopian world.” Smith says they wanted to keep the track very sparse—except for the chorus, which they wanted to be “almost shockingly loud.” “I wanted it to sound like this surprising moment where you get enveloped by a big warm hug of all these vocals,” he says.
