Jupiter and Mars - EP

“I don’t do drama/Just give me the summer,” sings Carla Wehbe on “is forever off the table?”, a wry detailing of an on-off romance. That track also sees the Sydney singer, songwriter, and producer reduce a movie-like fantasy of cruising through Paris to the humble reality of living with her parents. Such inversion of expectations is a signature of Wehbe’s layered indie pop, which smuggles cutting lyrics alongside indelible hooks. Wehbe increasingly mines her second EP for sly psychological shorthand too, mapping her inner contradictions on opener “introvert (with extroverted expectations)” and lamenting her perpetual romantic uncertainty on “addicted to self-deprecation.” Wehbe’s confessional turns add a relatable undertow of melancholy to her bright, cascading melodies, filling out this impressive five-song suite with notable emotional depth.
