Stefan du Randt: The Engineers

Stefan du Randt puts us right there in the room with world-class musical talent. Operating exclusively out of Sydney’s Studios 301, he achieves a consistent clarity of voice and sense of space in his work as a recording engineer, producer, and mixer. That’s unmistakable on Gamilaraay woman Thelma Plum’s swaggering 2019 single “Better in Blak,” as it is on Mac Miller’s sensitive 2020 ballad “Hand Me Downs,” both of which du Randt recorded. He also has a knack for rendering electronic elements with unusual warmth (see his work with Kimbra and Vallis Alps) and highlighting an impressive vocal range (Budjerah’s “Therapy”) as neatly as a vulnerable lyrical message (Carla Wehbe’s “introvert (with extroverted expectations)”). And in his mixing contributions to soul-influenced Aussie acts like Voli K and Field Of Wolves, he arranges classic elements like reverb, horns, and gospel choirs so that everything hits just the right emotional notes.
