Levelling up their svelte hooks and retro imagery, Client Liaison ascends to a higher plane on their second album. The Melbourne duo of singer Monte Morgan and keyboardist/producer Harvey Miller remain self-aware across Divine Intervention, riffing on party-starting predecessors like Chic and Hall & Oates while making a strong case to join their ranks. Written with Nick Littlemore (PNAU, Empire of the Sun), “Elevator Up” embraces the trajectory of EDM. Gazing further back, “Unloaded” echoes the piano-driven anthems of early house music. There’s even a rapped interlude from Miller amidst the hothouse synth-funk of “Strictly Business,” and triumphant horn bleats and flute licks embolden the songs’ laser-guided electronic pulse. Lyrically, Morgan blurs the line between everyman and upmarket, name-checking chili dogs and lemonade in one song, then champagne and canapés in the next.
