About Zion80
In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. Our earliest memory as a band is a three-month residency in NYC at John Zorn's famed venue, The Stone. We packed it in there, sometimes up to twenty musicians, and got loud and sweaty. The audiences that summer were amazing and launched the band. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot & Tim Sparks, Masada Guitars Fela Kuti, The Best Best of Fela Kuti Shlomo Carlebach, Shlomo Carlebach Live - Let There Be Peace Without these three albums, there would be no Zion80. Fela from the Afrobeat side - this album was an introduction to his genius and legacy. Shlomo Carlebach from the Jewish side - a classic album by the Singing Rabbi. And Zorn - our home on Tzadik! Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “In Our Youth” This song is special because it was written for our kids. Looking back at youth, at where we're at as people, and at those who came before us. The song celebrates the value and miracle of youth, and recognizes how beautiful and fleeting it is. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? In 2013, just a year after forming as a band, we had the amazing opportunity to travel to Krakow, Poland for the Jewish Culture Festival. We played in front of 20,000 people - an unforgettable experience!!! Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? The band is on hiatus as Jon Madof pursues other projects (including the Jon Madof Trio), but we'd love to collaborate with other artists - maybe Daniel Lanois or David Byrne!
