Swell Maps

One of the finest purveyors of punk's D.I.Y. philosophy, England's Swell Maps made gleefully shambolic three-minute punk blasts that paid little mind, thankfully, to proficiency and focused almost entirely on spirit. The group also had a pronounced experimental side; however, it was less a product of art concepts and more a reflection of the band's dismissive attitude toward being confined to any one sound or approach. The band released records -- including two studio albums -- on its own Rather label as well as the legendary Rough Trade before calling it quits in 1980. Both Epic Soundtracks and Nikki Sudden had respectable solo careers prior to their deaths in 1997 and 2006, respectively. Core member Jowe Head effectively relaunched the group in the early 2020s, spearheading archival releases, an official Swell Maps biography, retrospective shows, and a 2026 album, C21. ~ Nate Knaebel
