Swami LatePlate

Swami LatePlate is a very occasional jazz duo composed of drummer/composer Bobby Previte and pianist/keyboardist/composer Jamie Saft. They created the Swami LatePlate duo in 2007 to make modern, sophisticated, exploratory jazz using compositional aesthetics and acquired performance tropes of doom metal. Saft doubled on electric bass. The recording won props across the globe, prompting the pair to work together in other contexts as well. In 2009, Previte played on Saft's Black Shabbis, a set that reflected the harmonic and dynamic influences of the English proto-metal band. In 2014, they released The New Standard in a trio with bassist Steve Swallow. 2017's The Loneliness Road featured that trio fronted by vocalist Iggy Pop. 2020's Music from the Early 21st Century was another trio outing, this time with guitarist Nels Cline, and in October 2023, 16 years after their debut, the Swami LatePlate duo released DoomJazz II: Deception.
