Across SHOGUN IN LAGOS’s 23 tracks, Ivorian star Didi B moves comfortably between singing, rap, and dance music, bringing his Abidjan roots into conversation with sounds from across Africa. The album draws on Afrobeats, coupé-décalé, and amapiano, featuring an extensive cast of collaborators from throughout the continent and beyond. Early on, Didi is gliding over the smoky amapiano production of “Je m’appelle,” featuring Zlatan and Chley. “GBEDU” finds him exchanging playful verses with Nigerian rapper Phyno, while “Gaou la” features accomplished producer and MC 6uff, whose smooth baritone rides a groaning bassline. Elsewhere on the project, we get appearances from French singer Tayc (“JURU”), Afrobeats superstar Davido (“PARTY”), singer-songwriter and dancer Qing Madi (“ADIOS”), and one of the most prevalent voices in amapiano hitmaking, Focalistic, on “FASHION NOVA.” When Didi B goes solo, on songs like “CEMAGO,” “MAMACITA,” and “MONA LISA,” he keeps things mellow, allowing us the conclusion that the Didi B vision for African music is rooted in collaboration.
