Taking its name from Robert Del Tredici’s 1987 book of photography documenting the production of nuclear weapons, Deafheaven’s 2026 surprise three-track EP comes roaring out of the gates with a renewed sense of purpose. In following up their 2025 full-length Lonely People with Power, Deafheaven has recaptured the raw second-wave black metal inspiration that first propelled them from Bay Area obscurity into the public eye. “Hunter” is a tenacious long-form ripper with tasteful symphonic embellishment. “Sorry Laid the Hearth” is a scorching 13-minute hellscape that shifts through several movements of rage, reflection, and revenge on its way to a dissolving denouement. “Three Princes” serves as an ambient interlude between the two, and a reference to a 13th-century Persian poem that gave us the word “serendipity.”
