Electronic artists Fred again.. and LATIN MAFIA have been orbiting one another for some time now, clearly based on mutual admiration for the others’ work. After a fruitful initial joint session followed by a multi-day, livestreamed production marathon in Mexico City, the resulting 9 months & 50 hours mixtape captures not only the contents of their labors, but also the very essence of their collaboration. Fans of either act won’t be alarmed by the results, a skillfully crafted, oft club-oriented outing with pop and soul tendencies proudly displayed by way of cuts like “Bonita,” the breezy “Piensas En Mi,” and the intense “Quiereme.” Indicative of their respective and shared influences, the project traverses garage, cumbia, ambient, and other sounds without losing momentum or coherence. Their fresh reworks of material by the likes of Brian Eno and Jon Hopkins only help to clarify their own vision here, blissing out on a new edit of the former’s “Cmon” and a shuffling remix of the latter’s “Open Eye Signal.”
