On Radical Frame, English electronic producer Darren Cunningham assumes the character of someone in a weird headspace. Its first half has an appropriately claustrophobic, always-on feeling, stitching together glitched-out threats, enveloping beats, a melancholic vocalist whose balladry sinks into a four-on-the-floor pulse (on the stunning “Overchord”), and late-night trips to clubs playing house (“Withending”) and minimal techno (“Paris”). The album’s latter half consists of the virtuosic 16-minute “Sheets,” which showcases Cunningham’s ability to bring together the avant-garde and the everyday through his mixing skill, with Manchester MC Rainy Miller narrating the whirling of a mind that’s consumed by emotional overload.
