Though this was perhaps a tenuous claim, the Decatur, Georgia, native is nothing if not devoted to the spirit of old-school baby-making music. A decade after the release of his 2016 Mood mixtape—which featured the original version of his breakout single “B.E.D.”—the Cash Money signee celebrates its anniversary with Mood 2, whose 22 tracks prove that he’s as committed to vintage R&B formalism as ever. That first Mood tape showed the singer countering his silky melodies against the era’s melodic rappers (Kevin Gates, Dej Loaf, the late Rich Homie Quan), and he continues the tradition on its follow-up, joining forces with Kodak Black on the sweet “I Can Do Anything” and Cash Money label mate Juvenile on the NOLA bounce-inspired “Lick Back.” And on “Physical,” with kindred spirit Tink, he offers up his best Olivia Newton-John impression.
