Vika and Linda Bull’s ninth studio album—and their first to feature mostly original material since 1996’s Princess Tabu—is a profoundly intimate meditation on identity, ancestry, motherhood, aging, grief, and joy. The catalyst for the record was the sisters’ 2022 memoir No Bull, a deeply personal autobiography that set the confessional tone for Where Do You Come From? The honesty echoes in the soaring title track, a co-write with Hunters & Collectors’ Mark Seymour that recounts the Tongan Australian sisters’ early experiences with racism growing up in suburban Melbourne: “She called me Coca-Cola/My little sister too/‘You’re not from around here are you?/Nobody looks like you.’” The stripped-back, piano-led “Waiting on the Kid” is Linda’s reflection on single motherhood; “I Hit Pause” is informed by Vika’s experiences with menopause and early sobriety; while “Little Baby” is a lullaby rooted in ancestry. That piano is the album’s dominant instrument provides ample room for the sisters’ dazzlingly soulful harmonies, nowhere more so than in “Return to the Sea,” one of several tracks inspired by the grounding presence of water (“That’s How I Pray”).
